As the “hero” of a show, a character can sometimes get overlooked in favor of villains or flashier anti heroes. But on TVD, every character gets to shine, even the good guys. To boot, we the viewers have been lucky enough to witness a whole different side of Stefan, which has given the mightily talented Paul Wesley even more chance to shine in Season 3. Here is my list of Stefan’s best ever moments of the series.
10 - Brave New World/Bad Moon Rising-Stefan Helps Caroline Adjust to Being a Vampire: I love Stefan when he’s being a friend. Caroline had been turned by Katherine, Damon had tried to kill her, and Bonnie had rejected her. If ever a girl needed a friend, this was it and Stefan stepped up to the plate admirably. That’s the kind of friend I want to be.
9 - The Sacrifice-Stefan Saves Jeremy from Katherine: Jeremy’s plan to get the Moonstone from Katherine went about as well as any Gilbert plan: badly. Stefan couldn’t leave Jeremy trapped with Katherine so he took Jer’s place, to Katherine’s delight and at the expense of leaving Elena in Damon’s care. Heroes just don’t let innocent (albeit sometimes stupid) boys be trapped in tombs with 500 year old psychopathic vampires.
8- Founder’s Day: Stefan Saves Damon: This one makes the list because let’s face it, Season 1 Damon was mostly a brutal sadistic bastard. But Stefan braved a raging inferno to save him. He had no idea that Bonnie was going to help, he just did it. Because. And I loved it.
7 - Daddy Issues-Stefan Gets Caroline What She Needs After She’s Tortured: Here’s another thing a real friend does. He knows when he can’t give you what you need, so he brings you people who can. Caroline was abused by a man and then betrayed by a male friend. She didn’t need his shoulder to cry on. Stefan intuitively knew this and so he brought her the right people: Elena and Caroline. Another stellar example of what real friendship is. However, Brady didn’t get off so easily…
6 - Crying Wolf-Brady Gets What’s Coming To Him: I already hated Brady for what he did to Caroline. But when he decided to take Elena so he could sacrifice her? I really wanted to see someone rip his heart out. Where dreams come true and I get to watch Stefan pour on the bad-assery, as he is most likely to do when someone else threatens Elena. For Example:
5 - The Return-Stefan Opens a Can of Whoop-Ass on John Gilbert: I know that Uncle John kinda redeemed himself what with giving his life for Elena and all but he was a complete jerk most of the time and the way he treated his daughter when she visited him in the hospital, made me see red. Apparently there was a lot of that going around. One of my favorite scenes of the show, and for my money, the one pre season 3 scene that really gave me a taste of what Stefan was truly capable of if he went Rippah again. And… yeah.:o
4 - Our Town-Stefan Makes His Point to Klaus: “It’s alright Mindy, Stefan was just leaving after failing to make his point.” That was Klaus, laughing at Stefan. Um, yeah. Point made. Yikes.
3 - Ordinary People-Blood IS Thicker Than Compulsion: Stefan tried and failed to resist Klaus’ compulsion to attack Elena. But when it came to watching Mikael rip Damon’s heart from his chest? It was another matter. Speaking of which:
2- As I Lay Dying-Stefan Throws Away EVERYTHING in Order to Save Damon: There are plenty of examples of these two saving each other and making sacrifices but this was more than just risking one’s life or endangering a romance. Stefan knew that drinking human blood would mean selling his soul. His soul. The sacrifice he made here rivals what Spike did at the end of Buffy Season 6 when he fought to get his soul back. It’s an act that not just of supreme bravery and love, but of epic gallantry. The stuff of true heroes.
AND NOW for Sefan’s best moment.
1- Homecoming-Revenge: I love Joseph Morgan but Klaus has gotten away virtually unscathed after doing truly despicable things. But how do you hurt a creature who is invincible and immortal? That’s right Klaus, you take from me what I care about? I return the effin’ favor. I still get all tingly when I watch this scene. I hope if someone does kill Klaus, it gets to be Stefan. He’s earned it.
